My talk on Nanotechnology in orthopedics & spine is hot and emerging topic for research and development. Implants as Total Hip Replacement /Total Knee Replacement etc. are now increasingly by coated with nanomaterial as Titanium (Ti) and Hydroxyapatite (HA) which result in better bondage, integration with host bone thus increasing stability and longevity of implant, thus reducing long term complications of loosening etc.

The Congress will be held from 17th-20th November, 2022 at Serena Hotel, Islamabad and theme of conference is “Innovations-shaping the future of Orthopedic surgery”. This will highlight the most advanced strategies in common orthopaedic conditions through the advanced techniques and expect to meet thought leaders, renowned Orthopaedic surgeons, government pioneers, academia, researchers and technology providers who will be sharing their knowledge in the format of presentations, discussions, workshops providing a unique educational programme and a great opportunity to review the latest developments in the Orthopaedic field.

Reconstruction of the Thumb in Traumatic and Congenital LossThe Thumb holds special place in unique capability of human hand in grasp, prehensile function and its maneuverability. This is owed to its anatomical position and its complex movements including opposition. Traumatic loss of the thumb or its congenital absence results in severe compromise of function of the hand necessitating reconstruction by surgical intervention. The goals of thumb reconstruction include the restoration of thumb length, strength, position, stability, mobility, sensibility, and aesthetics. It is a rare event when all of these objectives can be achieved, and prioritization should be based on the goals and functional demands of the patient.Level of loss of thumb is the most important factor in determining the reconstruction technique. Traditionally, the thumb has been divided into three levels from reconstruction point of view: distal, middle and proximal third. Each level has many surgical options and choice depends on patient’s need, esthetic and functional requirements and surgeon’s expertise. Advent of microsurgery has added many sophisticated techniques, taking the perfection of reconstruction to another level. Reconstruction of the thumb by pollicization and by microsurgical techniques of toe to thumb transfer, by their functional achievements and artistic beauty have become epitome of hand surgery.Congenital loss of the thumb presents its own special problems due to variable anatomy, associated conditions and small size of structures. This lecture offers an overview of the special requirements of each level of amputation of the thumb and available reconstructive techniques.

Prof. Aneeq Zia

Driving insights in robotic-assisted surgeries using machine learning

Aneeq Zia serves as the Manager of Machine Learning Engineering and Operations at Intuitive Surgical, which is the global leader in surgical robotics. Aneeq has been with Intuitive since 2016 and has been working towards developing novel AI technologies for robot assisted surgeries. In his current position, his work focusses on developing automated pipelines that can help to develop and deploy machine learning models at scale. He is also involved in different research based projects including organizing global machine learning challenges at international conferences. Aneeq has published and reviewed for top machine learning and medical conferences/journals like MICCAI, IPCAI, IJCARS, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, etc, and has also been the recipient of IPCAI Young Investigator Award in 2017 and 2018.

For his education, Aneeq completed his PhD and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, USAand was a recipient of Fulbright scholar for his Master’s. During his graduate studies, his work was focused on computer vision and machine learning applied to medical application. More specifically, he worked on developing automated methods for assessment of surgical skills using video and sensor data. Before his graduate school, Aneeq received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from LUMS, Lahore, Pakistan, and focused his research work on control systems and robotics. 

“My talk will aim to provide a brief high-level overview of Intuitive Surgical (a global leader in surgical robotics) and the type of systems it builds. It will provide some details about the type of rich data that can be collected using the robotic system. The main focus afterward will be on how such data can be used to gain insights into surgical efficiencies and how those can be linked to clinical outcomes.
